BACKGROUND OF AREA

1. Legal Status

• ·         The management area is called Gaat-Mengiong Forest Management Unit (FMU) which consist of 66,190 ha out of total area 91,217 ha licenced under Forest Timber Licence no. T/3400.  The Gaat-Mengiong FMU is currently under Forest Timber Licence no. T/3400. FTL no. T/3400 is issued on the 12th April 2001 to Perbadanan Perusahaan Kemajuan Kayu Sarawak or Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) and expired on 11th April 2021. The Forest Timber Licence is currently renewed on yearly basis.

  ·         The area is located between latitudes 1º 30.096’ and 1º 47.603’, and longitude 113º 03.288’ and 113º 30.890’, with Sg. Gaat and its tributary, Sg. Balang defining most of its northern boundary. Please refer Figure 1.1 that shows the Locality Map of Gaat-Mengiong FMU.

  ·         The licenced area is contracted to Billion Venture Sdn. by Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) and Billion Venture Sdn. Bhd. through her subsidiary company Ballinwood Resources Sdn. Bhd. then further engaged Pan Contractor Sdn. Bhd. as sub-contractor for timber harvesting operations. 

1. Accessibility
• Gaat-Mengiong FMU is served by public road and logging road. It takes about 3 hours from Kapit Town to reach camp site.
